OPOA Subchapters

The OPOA Subchapters, also known as Special Chapters, represent particular segments of the law enforcement community, or serve the criminal justice field in general.  Each Special Chapter has at least twenty-five members, and is guided by a Constitution or set of By-Laws consistent with the OPOA Constitution.  Annual meetings are held for all members, as well as specialized training.

If you are interested in information on establishing a new Subchapter, please contact the OPOA business secretary at opoaofc@aol.com, or the OPOA president, Steve Piper at piper@ci.gresham.or.us.

Background Investigators Association

The Oregon Background Investigators Association was formed in June of 2000.  Since that time we have built a network of background investigators for several agencies throughout the state. To join the association you need to join OPOA. and then mark the Background Investigators Association on your application form.

We have jointly sponsored training seminars with other agencies during the fall months of the past two years and are currently assessing our future training needs. If anyone would like to become involved with any of the work in the chapter, please don’t hesitate to volunteer.

If you have questions or need informational material about the chapter, please call or e-mail one of the officers and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your interest and organizational support.

Child Abuse - Sex Crimes Association

The mission of the Oregon Child Abuse - Sex Crimes Association is to provide professional training, information sharing and consultations in the area of child abuse and sex crimes investigations.  Also, to recognize significant contributions in the areas of child abuse and sex crimes investigations.

The Child Abuse - Sex Crimes Association  meets annually in conjunction with the OPOA convention, and in conjunction with the SCAR Symposium in Eugene.  The SCAR Symposium web site states that "the SCAR Symposium is one of the nation's leading conferences on issues related to child abuse.  Over 600 professionals from around the country who work with abuse, such as therapists, social/case workers, law enforcement, attorneys and medical personnel will participate in this symposium.  Many of the attendees are involved in a multidisciplinary team approach to cases involving child abuse."

The Child Abuse - Sex Crimes Association sponsors the annual MDT Awards, also in conjunction with the SCAR Symposium, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in the areas of child abuse and sex crimes investigations.

Robbery /Homicide Investigators

The OPOA Robbery/Homicide Investigator's Subchapter was one of the first subchapters. This subchapter holds workshops each year to familiarize Robbery and Homicide Detectives with cases that had national or international attention in the media and in the law enforcement community. In 2004 one of the day-long workshops included a case review of the multiple-year investigation and prosecution of Washington's Green River murders.

The subchapter is interested in serving your needs. If you have suggestions for training or case review workshops contact any of the officers.
