Brief Overview:

Search warrants are vital to every investigator. Fortunately, they’re not as intimidating as some believe. In this class, learn when they’re required and how to efficiently write affidavits and warrants to get the evidence you need for your case. Samples of search warrants and affidavits will be shared. Tips and tricks will be shared on how to contact the right people at various organizations and web sites. As part of the class, the instructor will review the electronic process of preserving and obtaining records from Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.

No prior experience with search warrants is required. This hands-on class is designed for every patrol officer/deputy/trooper, as well as new detectives. It is also a great refresher for investigators with some search warrant experience.

After a review of search and seizure concepts and the process of obtaining a search warrant, class members will write two search warrants (including one for Facebook) and an arrest warrant based on realistic practical scenarios. The instructor or a deputy district attorney will provide feedback on affidavits and search warrants written.

Each student will leave the class with Word templates and forms for arrest warrants and search warrants to make warrant writing easier when they return to their agency.
