Class Overview

Sponsoring Agency: Oregon Department of Justice & OPOA Overview: This course will provide a summary of recent developments in legislation and legal precedent involving search and seizure, interviews, and criminal offenses. The instructors will also briefly cover civil forfeiture updates. Instructors: Kurt Miller, Oregon Dept. of Justice Kurt W. Miller is a Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Justice Division of the Department of Justice where he focuses on publications, warrants, and digital evidence. Before starting with DOJ in 2018, he was a Deputy District Attorney with the Marion County District Attorney’s Office for approximately ten years prosecuting a variety of cases in both the adult and juvenile divisions. Prior to becoming an attorney, Kurt spent six years as a police officer in Glendale, AZ where he performed various duties including: Field Training Officer, Tactical Operations Unit (SWAT), and Vehicular Homicide Investigator. Kurt also served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter crew chief instructor for seven years with a tour in Operation Restore Hope; Somalia, Africa. Kurt’s educational background includes: J.D., cum laude, Willamette College of Law (2008), B.A.S., summa cum laude, Arizona State University (2002), A.A.S., highest honors, Glendale Community College (1999). Colin Benson, Oregon Department of Justice Colin Benson has been a prosecutor since 2002. He has a background in bankruptcy, tax and financial regulation and his caseload with the Oregon Department of Justice is almost completely complex financial crime. He was first assigned a civil forfeiture matter in approximately 2009 and, aside from a year he spent in financial regulation with the Division of Financial Regulation, he has been managing civil forfeiture cases ever since. Colin invites law enforcement, securities, banking, and insurance professionals to contact him whenever they have questions about fraud, fraud prevention and financial crime prosecution.
